Our Congregation Includes

Discussion
  • Those who want to be part of a religious community where trust is in the potential which resides in individuals and in the process which works among people through honest sharing of perspectives.
  • Those whose minds and hearts are opening to the deeper spiritual significance of the ancient symbols, stories and texts.
  • Those who cannot be satisfied with either a simplistic literalism or a religion which simply fights against literalism.
  • Those who feel that there are many paths into the depths of the mystery on which our lives are set, even as they seek the one path most personally significant for them.
  • Those who resist the temptation toward exclusivity in religion.
  • Those who are challenged by the idea that each person has within the potential to achieve the highest.
Membership in this church is open to all those sensing the deeper longings of the spirit, who wish to walk in one company together--for the mutual support and benefit and toward the greater glory. Please visit our web page about our committees. Here is a brief sampling of community service that our members are involved with...
  • Adopt-a-School Partnership: There are many ways to help the children at Hawkins Mill Elementary School achieve higher levels. Among them: tutor a student having difficulty mastering basic skills; be a pen pal to build self-esteem; judge an essay contest, spelling bee or geography competition; in a classroom, volunteer to talk about your career.
  • Church School Community Service Project: To enhance our children's awareness of the needs of others and their own ability to make a difference, our church school participates in a service project each June. The month-long project gives the children time to learn about a different need in our community and to do something to help.
  • Facing History and Ourselves: In the fall of 1995, the Church of the River members filled out a survey describing their involvement in our congregation and in the community. The survey results show that our congregation donates time and money to a wide variety of beneficial activities. In addition to the numerous examples provided, our church community is involved with Facing History and Ourselves.

  • St. John's Soup Kitchen: One Saturday each month, volunteers from our congregation prepare and serve food to the hungry of Memphis.
  • Shelby County Interfaith: With over forty other racially diverse congregations, members of our church participate in projects that range from low income housing to public school reform.
