Our Web Presence
The First Unitarian Church of Memphis (Church of the River) has had presence on the World Wide Web for approximately eight years. Designed and maintained as a community service by a church member, the purpose of this web site is to provide a repository of church-related information and an opportunity for those interested in Unitarian Universalism to explore our church in Memphis, Tennessee. Content development is collaborated through periodic board and committee meetings. Ongoing communication is maintained so that all information on the web site is approved.
Listed below are frequently asked questions about decisions made regarding our web site:
What is the source of the information?
The church provided a variety of literature. Church board members reviewed the materials and requested that specific information be compiled and presented on the web site.
Who approves what goes on this web site?
When developing or revising the web site, approval to include specific information comes from board members, the Minister, and members of the church who represent various areas of church life.
Why is there not a chat room?
In an ongoing effort to remain a secured web site that requires relatively low maintenance and supervision, a chat room is not a preferred area at this time. A suggested location for online synchronous communication is Yahoo Chat (located at this url: http://chat.yahoo.com/) or a similar environment.
Can people contribute to the web site? If so, how? If not, why not?
Those interested in suggesting information for the web site should contact the church. If approved, the information will be forwarded to the Web mistress. While preserving the integrity and consistency of the web site with respect to design, suggestions are welcome.
How often is the church web site updated?
Updating the web site is dependent on the contribution of church members regarding announcements, additions, and corrections. Therefore, frequency ranges from several times within a day to every few weeks, depending on current church events and ongoing communication. The web site is a virtual voice, a way to announce news and to share information.

Visit our site map for information regarding the topic and location of each web page of our church web site.
How can I contact the church about the web site?
E-mail the church by clicking here. E-mail L.K. Goodwin by clicking here.
Why don't we have sound and moving images on our web site?
With respect to the diverse population regarding the variety of hardware, software, bandwidth, and skill levels of an entire church community, the web site remains easy to navigate and view. Design and capability of the web site continues to evolve as the church population demonstrates greater needs and expectations of the web site.
How many people actually use the church web site?
To respond to this question, a counter was added to the bottom of the church's
home page in April, 2003, indicating that we have had thousands
of visitors to our web site. It has since been removed but a new one may be added.
